13 more war remains found at Ho Chi Minh City park

Thirteen more sets of war remains have been recovered at Le Thi Rieng Park, bringing the total found there to 731.

The Ho Chi Minh City Military Command said on October 5 that its search teams had recovered 13 more sets of war remains and a set of artefacts at Le Thi Rieng Park, bringing the total number found in the area to 731.

On the same day, the search teams excavated and cleared more than 500 cubic metres of soil as they expanded the search area. To speed up the operation, the military command deployed three excavators, dump trucks and two other trucks to remove and transport soil.

So far, 731 sets of war remains have been recovered at Le Thi Rieng Park. Of these, 698 were found individually, while 33 were recovered from eight mass grave sites.

The search and recovery operation at Le Thi Rieng Park was launched on July 6 following the conclusion of Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra at a workshop verifying information about a mass grave of martyrs in the area.

Earlier, based on witness accounts and historical records, the Ho Chi Minh City Command estimated that hundreds of martyrs killed during the 1968 Tet Offensive and Uprising may have been buried in Do Thanh - Chi Hoa cemetery, now Le Thi Rieng Park.
