Lai Chau steps up response to lumpy skin disease in cattle

Lai Chau authorities have ordered urgent measures to contain lumpy skin disease after the virus was detected in cattle in Nam Tam Commune.

The Lai Chau People's Committee issued the directive on October 5 after cattle showing signs of the disease were reported in Pa Khom Village.

A local household raising 22 cattle reported on September 24 that 12 animals had developed suspected symptoms, including hard skin nodules on the neck, back, flanks, abdomen and limbs, as well as fatigue and deteriorating health.

Nam Tam Commune authorities worked with the provincial animal husbandry and veterinary agency to collect samples, which tested positive for Capripox virus, the cause of lumpy skin disease.

Pa Khom Village has 209 buffaloes and cattle, raising concerns that the disease could spread to other herds and neighbouring areas.

The provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment has instructed veterinary authorities and local officials to investigate and contain the outbreak, monitor livestock and test suspected cases.

Infected and suspected animals must be isolated, while affected farms and surrounding areas are to be cleaned and disinfected. Authorities have also ordered measures to control flies, mosquitoes, ticks and other disease vectors.

Vaccination against lumpy skin disease will be stepped up, particularly for unvaccinated cattle and buffaloes or animals whose immunity has expired in high-risk areas.

Local authorities have also been told to review livestock numbers and vaccination coverage, closely monitor herds and immediately report suspected cases for testing and treatment.

Farmers have been warned not to sell, slaughter or transport infected or suspected animals.

Other provincial agencies will tighten inspections of the trade, transport and slaughter of cattle and buffaloes and their products, with action to be taken against the movement of sick animals or livestock of unclear origin.
