The eight-member team used a boat to transport trees from the riverbank to Soi Tien, a sandbank in the middle of the Red River, where they were to be stored ahead of planting in the following days.
At about 2 pm, after unloading the trees, the boat headed back to shore near the pedestrian street in Lao Cai Ward. However, it sank while approaching the riverbank, sending one ranger into the Red River.
Authorities launched a search for the missing ranger after receiving the report.
By 9 pm, rescue teams had yet to find the missing man, and the search was continuing.
