Vietnam seeks UNESCO recognition for traditional lacquer - 1

Traditional lacquer art continues to be widely used

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism asked the Institute of Fine Arts to work with Hanoi and Nam Dinh Province’s departments of culture, sports and tourism, and authorities from Binh Duong Province and other agencies to draft a dossier for submission to UNESCO for intangible heritage status.

Lacquer is traditionally produced in many Asian countries, including China, Japan, Vietnam and South Korea.

Traditional lacquer has continued to be used for lacquer paint and many elements of modern art in Vietnam.

Compiling a dossier for lacquer craft is also a way to promote international co-operation and co-ordination in protecting intangible cultural heritage between regional countries.
