Hundreds of children participated in the Mask Festival on September 4 at the Temple of Literature in Hanoi to prepare for the nearing Mid-Autumn Festival.
The event was organised by volunteers, parents, art clubs in the city and lecturers and students in Creative with Children Group at Vietnam University of Fine Arts.
This is a part of Creative with Children Group's series to encourage children know more about traditional arts. Last year, the group held a programme to increase children's awareness about traditional paintings for Tet. Children were introduced to mask-making techniques and their meaning.
Besides making their own masks, children also painted their own pictures on paper fans. The best fan and mask painters were given a small gift.
Children brought their masks home or donated them to children being treated at National Hospital of Paediatrics for the coming Mid-Autumn Festival.
The organisers will give children books and hold similar festivals at Soc Son Nursing and Training School for Disabled Children and in Ho Chi Minh City on September 10. The organisers want to work with schools, cultural centres or publishers to organise similar activities.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated on September 15.
