In late July, Dantri/Dtinews reporters visited Van’s modest single-storey home near a melaleuca forest in Tan An Commune, Dong Nai Province. Her husband had recently died of carbon monoxide poisoning while working at a local ceramics factory.
His sudden death left Van devastated and exhausted, facing the daunting task of raising five children alone. Her eldest son, aged 14, has an intellectual disability.
Van said her husband had been the family’s main breadwinner, earning a steady monthly income of VND 7–8 million (USD 275–315). She contributed by doing household chores, caring for the children, and taking on extra work to earn around VND 3–4 million (USD 118–157) a month. Now, with his passing, the family has lost its greatest source of support.
“My husband worked so hard to provide for the children and to build this little house,” Van said through tears. “We still owe friends money we borrowed, and the house is unfinished. He promised to buy a proper door set by the end of this year, but now he’s gone.”
Le Thi Hong, former head of Cay Xoai Hamlet, said the family had faced hardship for many years, with both parents working as local factory labourers to support five children, including one with special needs.
“With her husband gone, Van’s life will be much more difficult,” Hong said. “We will propose that her family be recognised as a poor household to access government support. Local organisations will also seek community aid to help the family, ensuring the children can continue their education.”
