A Khmer family in Soc Trang Province is in desperate need of help to cure their son of a strange eye illness.

The family of Danh Ra lives in a dilapidated house with only one room in Xom Tro 2 Village. When it rains, they must use a plastic bag to cover the holes. Duong Thanh Phuong, deputy head of Xom Tro 2 Village, said 98% of the households are Khmer people and most of them are living in poverty, but Ra's family is in the most dire straits.
Ra's mother said, "When he was about five or six months old, a strange white dot appeared on his left eye. We took him to the hospital in Thanh Tri District but the doctors said they couldn't treat him and advised us to go to the provincial hospital. The provincial hospital then transferred him to HCM City Children's Hospital. We didn't have the money to pay for treatment there, so we returned home."

The white dot actually increased in size until it covered Ra's whole left eye. "He's in pain and cries all the time. Seeing him like a terrible thing for us too. I hope for a miracle to cure him," she said.
Ra's father works as day labourer while Lien, his mother, stays home to look after the children. He said, "Last year, they borrowed VND15 million to start a business. When it failed we were left with a huge debt."
Nguyen Quoc Viet, chairman of Chau Hung Commune People's Committee, said that he hopes kind people will help Ra and his family overcome their difficulties.
