DTiNews readers have sent nearly VND130 million (USD6,200) to help a boy from Ninh Binh Province, who collects waste to earn money for his cancer treatment.
Duong's mother receives VND130 million donation
Nine-year-old Doan Van Duong from Dong Huong Commune, Kim Son District suffers from blood cancer.
After Duong's father was infected with HIV eight years ago, he was no longer able to work, leaving all the family's burdens to his wife. Four years later, Duong was diagnosed with blood cancer.
Because of poverty, Duong had to delay his treatment and help his mother collect waste to cover the expenses of both day to day life and medication. However their income is only about VND500,000 per month and they cannot afford both. Duong has not been to the hospital since last year.
“I’m happy to help my mother. Sometimes, we work until 8pm. I’m not afraid of working hard. I'm much more afraid of being beaten by my father when he is in pain,” the boy said.
"There were times when I thought I couldn't go on anymore. I don't have much hope for my husband, but I want my son to be healthy. I don't even feel like I'm alive," Duong's mother said.
After their story was published, many people visited their home and gave nearly VND50 million so that Duong would be able to resume his treatment. In the mean time, readers also donated a sum of VND129,540,000 through DTiNews.
Duong's mother visited the DTiNews' offices on November 3 to receive the donation. His mother expressed her gratitude to every kind individual who extended their help.
