Mrs. Huyen and her ailing son

Phan Thi Huyen, 39, lives in Ha Tinh City with her 16-year old son, Duong Ngoc Toan, who was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver caused by hepatitis B.

Huyen said that, according to many hospitals in Hanoi her son’s liver enzymes are too high, so he need active treatment. However, the treatment was not effective and his weight fell to 28kg.

Even though the treatment did not work, it left the family with a huge debt of hundreds of millions of VND.

Doctors in a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City said that Toan would need a liver transplant to save his life. There were none available for him, and his mother immediately decided to become a living donor. But she she found out that the surgery would cost VND800 million (USD38,090), she was completely shocked. Huyen’s husband is unemployed works in Russia to be a labourer, but his income is modest and unstable.

Since, Toan became sick, Mrs. Huyen has had to stay at home to take care of him, abandoning her job.

Despite bad health, Toan still wishes for recovery so he can return to school and fulfill his dream of becoming a comedian in the future.

Despite bad health, Toan still wishes for recovery so he can return to school

To date, she has been trying to borrow VND350 million (USD16,660) out of the VND800 million (USD38,090) for the surgery, which is scheduled for next month. Meanwhile, each month, her family has to pay an interest of VND21 million for bank bank loans. She has offered to sell her garden, has not found any buyers.

Unfortunately, the VND800 million only covers the fees for surgery. After the surgery her son will require costly treatment.
