Numerous surgeries threaten life of little boy

A poor couple in Quang Tri Province are calling for financial help to save their two-year-old son who has gone through a number of surgeries.

Truong Nguyen Quan is one of a set of twin sons of a poor couple in Nhi Trung Village. Le Thi Thanh Mai and Truong Van Chien were happy when the twins were born. They quickly found out that one of the boys, Quan, had a slight deformity of the leg but he was treated quickly.

When he was three months old, Quan became blind and was admitted to Quang Tri General Hospital. The parents were shocked when doctors said Quan had hydrocephalus. They brought him to Hue Central Hospital and received the same diagnosis. Quan's parents borrowed money from any source they could find for his surgery.

"I prayed for the surgery to end quickly and that my son would wake up. As if my voice were answered, the surgery was successful. But doctors said it would take a long time for him to recover fully," said Quan's mother.

Mai also said when the weather changed, Quan would get high fevers and refuse to eat.

A short time later, the incision on Quan's head showed signs of infection. Quan's parents brought him to Hue Central Hospital for the second surgery. However, doctors had to do a third surgery just to save his life.

Quan's father said, "It's painful to see him lying still on a hospital bed. No matter how hard it is, we'll do our best to get him cured. They keep doing surgeries on him, but he's still not well. Recently, we had to go to Hanoi for one month of treatment. He is half-blind now and unable to hear or talk anymore."

Sometimes, the burden of Quan's health was so much that they couldn't to do anything else. Mai said they would come back to Hanoi for rehabilitation treatment. However, they do not know where to find the money, and their debts is already extremely high.
