A poor mother in the Central Highlands Province of Dak Nong is calling for help as she looks after her ailing husband and her two mentally-ill daughters.
Do Thi Vi, 59, in Dak Mil District, Dak Nong Province is a retired worker with a monthly pension of VND2 million.

In 1993, she gave birth to her eldest daughter after having a haemorrhage. Initially, doctors said that it could be very difficult to ensure the survival of both the mother and the baby, but the surgery was successful.
However, the more the daughter grew up, the more she has began to exhibit unusual behaviour, and show symptoms of a mental illness. Teachers advised Vi to not to send her to school because she couldn't concentrate in class. She often showed erratic behaviour.
The couple had the second daughter in 1999, but gradually she has displayed the same symptoms as her sister. Meanwhile, Vi’s husband is often sick and only stays at home, so the whole family depends on her small retirement pension of VND2 million per month.
Some months ago, she worked for a coffee processing firm, but now she has to stay at home to take care of her daughters and her ailing husband. Sometimes, neighbours can give them food, but this is just now and again.
Nguyen Van Cuong, Vice Chairman of Thuan An Commune, said that Vi's family have been certified as a family living in poverty and receive benefits. He hoped they would receive more support from donors.
