Dang Dinh Tien, a father from Thai Binh Province, whose wife suffers mental illness, has lost the use of his right hand and is struggling to support his family.

"Tien's right hand swelled up but since he can't afford to go to hospital, the swelling got worse," said Nguyen Phuong Anh, from Hanoi's Bach Mai Hospital. "When he was admitted, he had ha igh fever and his hand was infected."
He needs strong antibiotics and intensive care, but the daily cost of VND1m (USD47) is too much. Tien needs an operation, but wants to go home because he cannot afford it.

"I want to be healthy to help my wife and child, but I can't. I tried to borrow money from many places, but it's not good. These days, I live on free meals from the hospital," he said.
Tien's wife has mental illness and is being treated at Thai Binh Province Mental Hospital. They had three children, but only one survived.
"My kid is in ninth grade and may not be able to live alone," he said.
