A man from Phu Tho Province is cherishing every day he can share with his wife and children for fear that kidney failure may take his life at any time.
Phung Tien Bien is in the final stages of the disease. He lives with his wife, Nguyen Thi Linh, and their daughter in a small rented room in Quang Minh town in Me Linh, an outlying district of Hanoi.
Bien has to get medical treatment for his kidney three times per week
The couple met just a few years ago. They fell in love and married, set on a life of happiness, especially after their first daughter was born.
However, their happiness was disrupted since Bien was diagnosed with kidney failure.
“I was extremely shocked and even fell into a faint when I was told of my husband’s health problems. I would never have imagined that I would have to count the days my husband would still be with us,” said Linh.
They have tried everything at their disposal to pay for Bien’s treatment, including asking for help from their both families, and the lots owned by both Linh and Bien’s parents have been used as collateral for loans. Still, Bien's situation seems to be getting worse.
A ray of hope came when one doctor said Bien could possibly be saved by a kidney transplant, but the cost of the surgery would be between VND300 million and VND400 million. Because of their financial straits, the price is out of their reach.

Doctor Nguyen Thanh Hung, of Phuc Yen General Hospital, where Bien is undergoing treatment, said, “Bien is in the final stages of kidney failure. I’ve given him treatment for two years, and the costs for him are around VND3 million per month excluding insurance. A kidney transplant may save his life.”
Aware that the chance for his recovery is slim, Bien tries to work whenever he is not in the hospital being treated. He knows that his family would need it if he passed.
“I feel most sorry for my wife and my daughter, and I don’t know how they will survive when I'm gone,” he said.
The wife is eight months pregnant for their second baby
Despite their desperate situation, Linh decided to have a second baby and is now eight-months pregnant.
“Sometimes, my husband tells me that if there are many men who would love me and take care of me, and that I should consider that when he passes away. When I hear that there is a throbbing pain in my heart, and I can do nothing but hope for a miracle," she said.
