Addressing the event, Vu Nhu Van, Acting Director General of the MOLISA Department of Occupational Safety and Health, said assessing workplace risks plays a crucial role in devising measures to improve working conditions, reduce workplace accidents, and ensure the safety of workers.
According to a MOLISA report an average of 5,800 workplace accidents occurred every year in the 2006-2010 period and 500 of them resulted in deaths. The mining and construction industries accounted for the most cases (47 percent).
Lack of training from employers, unsafe working equipment, workers’ violations of work safety rules and improper inspection for labour safety are the major factors that caused accidents, says the report.
MOLISA proposed implementing the National Programme on Occupational Safety and Health by promoting communication and training, reinforcing management, and strengthening the inspections for labour safety.
The seminar was part of the 2011 National Week for Occupational Safety and Health and Fire Prevention.
