Rare sea creatures, especially whales, that drift to the central coast of Vietnam are being ill-treated by the locals’ custom while ignored by local authorities.

Most of the whales had already died before drifting to shore. Whales are considered sacred among locals. They believe that they will bring good luck to the fishermen. They are even respectfully referred to as "lords" in coastal villages.
In many cases, however, the whales were just injured, and are not turned over to capable organisations who could help them. In the end, they are simply left for the fishermen to worship.
Most recently, on August 27, fishermen in Quy Nhon Province saw a female whale coming ashore. The 1.5-long, 40-kilogram creature had been injured. The fishermen put her on a large altar and gathered around to recite prayers.
The whale, of course, eventually died.
The local fishermen have been acting according to this custom for many years.
Local authorities have failed to propose any effective measures to protect these rare species, who are in need of marine experts to help preserve them.
According to one expert, there are not enough rescue centres and at the present time. And those which do exist mainly rely on funds from NGOs.
Chu Anh Khanh, from Nha Trang Oceanographic Institute, said that the waters off the central coast are home to many rare species of marine life.
"If they are found injured, they should be brought to centres that have the facilities to rescue them. Also, locals should be educated about the damage they could potentially do."
The custom of worshiping whales has been around for a long time. Khanh added that, in cases where the animal is already dead, the local people should be allowed to carry out their ancient rituals in a way that will not pollute the environment.
