Duong Van Luong was brought to the National Hospital of Dermatology and Venereology in Hanoi by his uncle six years ago. However, after his uncle died in a traffic accident, Luong's treatment also halted.
His father died years ago, leaving behind two children. His mother lacked funds to continue the treatment. She is from Cao Lan ethnic minority group and is unfamiliar with large cities.

Luong lost one of the eyes, while the other is nearly blind. His skin cracks and has many scaly patches. Being too aware of his illness, he rarely talks or complains.
To Thi Dinh, Luong's mother said, "We have received a lot of support from kind readers and doctors. I was told that he couldn't be cured but the treatment would help ease his pain."
Pham Thi Chau, Dantri's head accountant, transferred VND229,200,000 to Dinh. Dinh said she would spend VND10m (USD427) to donate to two other disadvantaged cases and deposit the rest to pay for Luong's treatment as well as to take care of her daughter.
