Director of the Vinh International Airport, Hoang Van Thu has announced that the repair work on the runway was completed at 5.30 am on Tuesday morning and reopened at 7 am. It received the first flight from Hanoi at 8.20 am.
"Although the crack was only around 40 square metres, we have checked and expanded the repair work to 1,000 square metres," Thu said, adding that this was not a serious incident.
The airport had to temporarily close from 10 am on July 3 after an eight-metre-long and seven-centimetre-deep crack was found on the runway. The problem was said to have been caused by prolonged hot weather. Some 20 flights were affected by the incident.
Vinh International Airport covers some 30,000 square metres with just one 2,400-metre-long runway that entered operation in 2003. The airport currently serves between 21-26 flights daily.
Nghe An and some other northern and northern central provinces have just experienced a severe heat wave with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius.
