Hoang Van Viet, a Vietnamese student studying in Taiwan, was found dead on December 29 after being killed from knife wounds.

Nguyen Thanh Trung, 31, an illegal Vietnamese worker, gave himself up to the police. According to the China Times, Trung said that three days ago he had met with Viet and they had dinner together. During the dinner Viet humiliated Trung and said he would help him to avoid being arrested by local police because of his status as an illegal worker.

Trung said he was worried about what Viet had said to him and was insulted which was his motivation for killing him.

The murder was caught on camera and it showed an apparently drunk Viet being stabbed from behind with a knife by Trung. Viet had been on his way back to the hostel where he was staying when the murder occurred. After the crime, Trung went back to Lam Khau, his working place.

According to the police report, Viet and Trung knew each other before the incident. Trung was not happy with his previous jobs and he violated the employment contract by quitting the job after finding another job on his own.

Viet’s friends said that he always cared about others and never annoyed anyone. A representative from his university said he was an excellent student and they will donate his family VND25 million ($1,339). Viet’s family will also benefit from life insurance worth VND500 million ($26,780).
