The Hai Phong Inmarsat Land Earth Station has received an SOS signal from the Anh Son, the Vietnamese timber cargo vessel, that lost contact in the area off the West Bengal coast.
The captain said the vessel was 32 nautical miles off the coast of India. He said several days ago the ship lost its rudder a week ago and had been out of control in rough seas since then.
The Anh Son has 15 crew members on board and they are still safe, according to the Vietnam Maritime Communication Company. However, supplies of food have run out and the situation is described as dangerous.
The Hai Phong earth station is co-ordinating with the National Search and Rescue Association to ask for support from other ships and Indian rescue craft.
The Anh Son, owned by Anh Son Shipping Trading Company, was on its way transporting wood from Hai Phong Port to India when the incident occurred.
