The ministry also appointed Prof. Dr. Ngo Bao Chau as director of the institute.

The Hanoi-based institute, under the management of the ministry, is expected to encourage overseas Vietnamese mathematicians to return to join in the new institute\'s development.

The Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, it is hoped, will become a prestigious maths centre, which will improve the quality of research and scholarship in Vietnam.

The announcing ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan; Minister of Education and Training Pham Vu Luan; Robert J.Zimmer as well as the President of the University of Chicago.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Chau said this is a memorable day in Vietnamese academic development history. He also pledged to try his best to make the institute a great example for education in Vietnam.

Deputy Prime Minister Nhan said that the country has made great strides in mathematics in the last 40 years, including Prof. Chau’s being awarded the Field Medal, the world’s top prize in mathematics, last year.

The deputy PM also called for support from the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Home Affairs for the institution’s operations.

The Field Medal won by Prof. Chau, comparable to the Nobel Prize for mathematics, is a great honour for Vietnam, making it only the second nation in Asia, after Japan, to have citizen awarded the medal.

In 2009, his evidence proving Langland’s fundamental lemma was selected by Time Magazine as one of the 10 most outstanding scientific discoveries of 2009.
