Vietnam seeks to increase mandatory energy efficiency

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung called for greater efforts to use energy effectively and economically at a conference hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in Hanoi on December 16.

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung called for greater efforts to use energy effectively and economically at a conference hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in Hanoi on December 16.

In his remarks, Deputy PM Dung said after 5 years of implementing the Law on the Effective and Economical Use of Energy, Vietnam has adopted a uniform system of legal normative documents, which are useful for improved plans of action.

Vietnam needs to reduce its use of fossil fuels, increase renewable energy, and boost energy saving technologies, he said, adding that Vietnam is facing a huge energy challenge as it is set to import 80 million tons of coal by 2030.

“Saving energy will help Vietnam reduce energy imports, focus on renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Ministry of Industry and Trade and localities should revise the law and sublegal documents. Energy users should be more responsible and energy efficiency should be made mandatory," he noted.

Participants also proposed to place a cap on energy use for sectors that consume too much energy and help businesses renovate their technologies.
