Vietnam reports trade surplus of over USD12 billion in 2022

Vietnam enjoyed a trade surplus of USD 12.40 billion in 2022, triple that of the previous year, according to a report released on January 10 by the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

This was also the seventh year that the country reported a trade surplus.

The report showed that import-export turnover reached USD730.20 billion in 2022, up 9.10 percent compared to 2021's figure, with USD 506.83 billion coming from the foreign-invested sector, up 9.30 percent.


Last year's import revenues increased by 7.80 percent against 2021, to USD 358.90 billion. Meanwhile, export revenues reached USD371.30 billion, up 10.50 percent year on year.

The report also said that a total of 36 commodities raked in more than USD1 billion each in export revenue, accounting for 94 percent of the total, in which eight products posted over USD10 billion each, making up 70.10 percent.

Meanwhile, 46 products saw import value rise to over USD1 billion each, whilst six exceeded the USD10 billion mark, making up 93.30 percent and 52.10 percent of the total, respectively.

The US was Vietnam's biggest importer in 2022, with turnover estimated at USD 101.50 billion, while China remained the largest exporter, at USD109.90 billion.

Last year, Vietnam also recorded a trade surplus of USD 29.40 billion with the European Union, and a trade deficit of USD 56.90 billion with China.
