The delivery of 5,000 tonnes of Vietnamese rice to Cuba as a gift took place at the headquarters of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Trade and Investment (MINCEX) on June 19.

The gift was announced by President Tran Dai Quang during his visit to Cuba in November 2016.

Present at the delivery ceremony were Deputy Director General of the Vietnamese General Department of State Reserves Le Van Thoi, Vietnamese Ambassador to Cuba Nguyen Trung Thanh and Director General of the Cuba Food Export-Import Corporation (Allimport) Alejandro Mustelier Zamora, among others.

Le Van Thoi recalled material and spiritual assistance the Cuban people provided to Vietnamese people in the past, and emphasised the support of the Vietnamese Party, State and people for the Cuban people’s revolutionary cause.

For his part, Alejandro Mustelier Zamora expressed his appreciation for the gift, saying that it is a token of friendship between the two Parties, States and peoples.

He highlighted the gift’s significance for people in Cuba’s eastern provinces, who are facing food shortages after a strong storm hit their region last year.

The rice has arrived at the port of Santiago city, eastern Cuba and will be divided up and sent to provinces in need.
