Vietnam makes new record as daily Covid-19 patient tally surpasses 1,000

An additional 527 new Covid-19 infections have been confirmed in Vietnam in the past six hours, raising the Monday tally to 1,102 and the total number of patients in the country to 21,035, the Ministry of Health has reported.

According to the ministry's report, 514 of the newly-confirmed patients are locally-transmitted cases most of whom were detected in quarantine sites or areas under lockdown in some localities including 270 in Ho Chi Minh City, 114 in Binh Duong, 62 in Dong Thap, 11 in Tien Giang, 11 in Phu Yen, 10 in Khanh Hoa, eight in Dong Nai, six in An Giang, four in Binh Phuoc, four in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, three in Binh Dinh, three in Tay Ninh, three in Bac Giang, two in Quang Ngai, and one each in Bac Ninh, Nghe An, and Lam Dong.

Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have admitted that the virus fight in the city is facing great challenges as more chains of transmission of unknown origin have been uncovered, and many cases are asymptomatic.

As of Monday evening, 17,594 locally-transmitted cases have been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country on April 27, including 6,675 in Ho Chi Minh City and 5,668 in Bac Giang Province. The outbreak has so far spread to 55 cities and provinces nationwide.

13 imported patients include 12 Vietnamese people and a Kazakhstan man who recently arrived in Vietnam from Indonesia and Qatar. They were sent to quarantine areas in Tra Vinh and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces upon arrival and are now being treated at local hospitals.

With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 19,933 including 18,075 locally-transmitted cases.

As of 6 pm on July 5, a total of 8,022 Covid-19 patients had recovered and been discharged from hospital.

So far there have been 90 deaths, most of them being the elderly with serious underlying diseases.

At present, over 200,000 people who had close contact with Covid-19 patients or returned from virus-hit areas are being monitored at hospitals, quarantine facilities, and at home.

As of July 5, Vietnam has conducted nearly  four million doses of Covid-19 vaccine. More than 223,000 people have received two doses of the vaccine.
