The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and authorities of the southern province of Ben Tre held a ceremony to announce the export of the first pomelo lot to the US this morning, November 28.
Six years after registering pomelo exports to the US, US and Vietnamese agencies finalised procedures, including phytosanitary issues. The US has officially agreed to accept the import of Vietnamese pomelos.
Ben Tre has become the first locality to be allowed to export the fruit to the US.
With the event, pomelo has become the seventh Vietnamese fruit allowed to enter the US market following dragon fruit, rambutans, lychees, longans, star apples and mangos.
Vietnam is home to 105,400 hectares of pomelo with a total output of nearly 905,000 tonnes per year. The Red River Delta region has 13,000 hectares, the northern midland region with 30,000 hectares and the Mekong Delta region with 32,000 hectares.
As many as 36 pomelo growing areas in 10 Vietnamese provinces have been provided with the Production Unit Code for export to the US, including 11 in Ben Tre.
In the first 10 months of this year, Vietnam earned USD2.76 billion USD from exporting 3,250 tonnes of vegetables and fruits, mostly to the Netherlands, Germany, China and Canada
