According to the ministry's report, six of the newly-confirmed patients were detected at the Hanoi-based National Hospital for Tropical Diseases. The hospital has stopped receiving new in-patients since May 5 to conduct Covid-19 tests for all staff members, patients, and patients' caregivers. At least 2,600 people have been found to have come into contact with the new Covid-19 patients from this hospital. And 61 people have been confirmed infected by May 9.
Nine other patients who have also been infected in the community include five in Bac Giang Province, two in Lang Son Province, and one each in Ha Nam and Dak Lak provinces.
With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 3,245, including 1,826 locally-transmitted cases. As of May 9, 256 new locally-transmitted cases have been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country on April 27. The outbreak has so far spread to 22 cities and provinces nation-wide.
As of 6 am on May 9, a total of 2,602 Covid-19 patients had recovered and been discharged from hospital. There have been 35 deaths, most of them being the elderly with serious underlying diseases.
At present, over 42, 000 people who had close contact with Covid-19 patients or returned from virus-hit areas are being monitored at hospitals, quarantine facilities, and at home.
On May 8, 30,678 more people were given Covid-19 vaccine in Vietnam, raising the total number of vaccinated people in the country to 832,635 who are mostly health workers and people participating in Covid-19 prevention activities.
