Two rare sea turtles freed from fishing nets off Con Dao

Two environmental workers in Con Dao Special Zone rescued two rare sea turtles entangled in drifting fishing nets while collecting rubbish at sea.

The Con Dao administration said the workers discovered the exhausted green turtles struggling near the shoreline on May 14 during a marine clean-up operation.

The pair immediately cut away the nets wrapped around the turtles and safely released them back into the sea.

Authorities said the swift response helped save the protected marine animals and reflected growing community awareness of marine conservation.

Con Dao Island is known for its diverse marine ecosystem and as a nesting ground for several endangered sea turtle species. However, plastic waste and abandoned fishing gear remain major threats to marine life in the area.

Local authorities said Con Dao has recently stepped up environmental protection campaigns, wildlife rescue efforts and public awareness programmes aimed at preserving marine ecosystems.

The rescue has drawn praise locally as a meaningful act highlighting the importance of protecting the marine environment.
