Twins malformed, hard to separate: doctors

Due to some serious malformations, it may be difficult to separate the conjoined twins born a week ago, Ho Chi Minh City’s Pediatrics Hospital No 1 said.

Due to some serious malformations, it may be difficult to separate the conjoined twins born in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang a week ago, Ho Chi Minh City’s Pediatrics Hospital No 1 said following a second meeting Tuesday.

The baby on the left has difficulty breathing and has an undeveloped lung, and has been placed on a ventilator

A CT scan last Monday found that the twins have two separate nervous systems but are attached at the chest and abdominal cavity.

They share a genitourinary system while the bottoms of their stomachs are connected.

They also have serious defects in the cardiovascular system.

The hospital decided to invite officials from the city department of health to find a resolution together.

Another meeting between doctors, professors, and experts on external and internal pediatrics from the city’s Heart Institute, Hospital for Traumatology and Orthopedics, and the hospital is likely to be held today.

Dr Cam Ngoc Phuong, head of the neonatal intensive care unit at the hospital, said the baby on the right has a heart with a single atrium – the two upper chambers – while the two have attached hearts.

The baby on the left is in a more serious condition since she has gastrointestinal bleeding and discharges brown fluids from the stomach.

She also has difficulty breathing and has an undeveloped lung, and has been placed on a ventilator.
