Thu Thiem Tunnel, the most modern of its kind in Southeast Asia, has continued facing cracks after only one year of being operational.
Dozen of cracks were discovered in both lanes designed for cars and motorbikes. Some of them were more than one metre long, with the centre section seeing the most.
Many of the cracks were old and are difficult to see by the naked eye. But after a second repair job in November-December, they have become even more visible, as the Japanese contractor, Obayashi, used glue to fill them in.
The first ones were discovered directly after being recast, and several repairs. After six months in use, the tunnel continued to show new cracks.
The contractors tried to deal with the situation for the first time in August and September, and a second time in November and December.
