Surapong told a Bangkok-based VOV correspondent that Yingluck Shinawatra and her Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung will hold talks on measures to increase cooperation in various areas, including the energy sector.

Energy cooperation is a new area in bilateral relations, said Surapong.

As both Thailand and Vietnam are the world’s leading rice exporters, cooperation in ensuring food security will also be discussed during their talks in Hanoi, said the diplomat.

Last year, two-way trade between Thailand and Vietnam increased by 18 percent to reach US$7.2 billion. Thai businesses have so far invested in more than 250 projects in Vietnam with total capitalisation of US$5.8 billion.

This is Yingluck Shinawatra’s first visit to Vietnam after she took office in August 2011.
