State officials to enjoy longer Tet holiday

The PM has announced that all state officials in Vietnam will enjoy eight days off during the Lunar New Year holiday.

The Prime Minister has announced that all state officials in Vietnam will enjoy eight days off during the Lunar New Year holiday.

PM Nguyen Tan Dung’s decision comes after a proposal by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs and the Department of Labour Safety.

The holiday will start on January 31 and will last until February 7, said Vu Nhu Van, from the department. Employees will have off of work on the Monday and Tuesday before Tet begins. However they will make up those days by working on January 29 and 30, a Saturday and Sunday.

The decision also allows state officials a day off on Monday, April 11, for the occasion of the anniversary of King Hung’s death (which officially falls on April 12). Officials will make up for this three-day holiday beforehand, by working on Saturday, April 9.

The aim is not only to give state employees some extra time for travelling and celebrating the holiday, but perhaps also give a slight boost to the economy through extra consumption.
