Special taxi card proposed for Hanoi

Nguyen Quoc Hung, Director of the Hanoi Department of Transport, said the move is expected to restrict the situation in which taxi drivers from other localities to come to Hanoi, adding to the local traffic pressure and social disorder.

Besides, taxi firms are also required to return the old card to the local Transport Department and receive a new one. Meanwhile, shortening the validity of taxi license has also been recommended.

Nguyen Duc Thang, Deputy Head of the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam, said his agency supports the proposal and will join hands with Hanoi to carry out this.

Head of the Ministry of Transport’s Taxi Transportation Department said issuing a specific colour of taxi cards in big cities like Hanoi and HCM City was a good idea.

Currently, Hanoi has 107 taxi firms, including 105 companies and two cooperatives, with 17,000 vehicles and 20,000 drivers. Since 2012, Hanoi has halted the license of new taxi firms.

According to Director of the Hanoi Department of Transport, stations of Noi Bai International Airport have been expanded to meet the rising demand of passengers. However, the number of taxi at the airport remains modest. He has proposed raising additional 500-600 cabs for the airport, mostly for operation at night.
