Many of Hanoi's neighbourhood playgrounds lie idle while larger parks become overcrowded.

According to municipal authorities, there are 2,200 "entertainment spots" for children in Hanoi, of which, 1,700 are located in wards and communes. However much of the equipment for these play areas is in need of repair.
Many playgrounds in districts such as Yen Hoa, Nghia Tan, Nghia Do, Buoi and Thanh Cong have become all but abandoned, with several being used as parking lots or areas to hang laundry.
Meanwhile larger parks, such as Lenin Square and the area surrounding the statue of Ly Thai To, have seen much more use.
Other parks, including Thong Nhat, Bach Thao and Thu Le seem to be less attractive to children and parents, leaving many children to play and do physical activities in the streets.
Some have blamed the lack of attractive playgrounds, along with study pressures, for everything from the rise of video game stalls to childhood depression.
