An international seminar on the development of eco-industrial zones in Vietnam was held by the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MoPI), in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), in Hoi An City, the central province of Quang Nam on September 29.

The event attracted more than 130 domestic and international experts, discussing technical standards and legal framework to form the eco-industrial zone model in Vietnam.

They shared that in order to form eco-industrial parks, the authorities need to set advanced standards on greenhouse gas emissions, waste treatment and ensure green space as well as encourage technologies related to recycling and reusing power.

Over the past ten years, the Vietnamese economy has gain rapid growth with the significant contribution of industrial zones. As of June 2016, Vietnam has 321 industrial and export processing zones, attracting more than 6,600 foreign direct investment projects and 6,200 domestic investment projects with total registered capital of over US$105 billion and VND693 trillion, respectively.

However, industrial production is causing numerous challenges to the environment and people’s health. Currently, 16% of industrial zones have yet to install wastewater treatment plants while 20% of industrial waste has been found to be harmful.

The building of eco-industrial zones is highly necessary to improve the efficiency of production activities and protect the environment, contributing to the implementation of the Government’s green growth strategy, affirmed participants.

The MoPI, in co-ordination with the UNIDO, is carrying out the project on ‘implementing initiatives on eco-industrial zones towards sustainable industrial zone model in Vietnam’. The project received a total non-refundable aid of more than US$4.5 million from the Global Environment Fund and Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs. It is being piloted at Khanh Phu industrial zone in Ninh Binh province, Hoa Khanh industrial zone in Da Nang city and Tra Noc 1 and 2 in Can Tho city.

On the basis of results recapped from the two-day seminar, the MoPI will set out a number of regulations on eco-industrial zones in preparation for submission to the Government in late 2016.
