Residents flock to supermarkets as social distancing tightens in Danang

Many people in Danang City have flocked to buy foods and necessities to prepare for a possible strict social distancing period.

Many people in Danang City have flocked to buy foods and necessities to prepare for a possible strict social distancing period.

On August 12, Party Secretary of Danang Nguyen Van Nen said if the situation does not improve, they would have to impose stricter preventive measures. Residents will be asked to stay home and only go out if necessary. Schools, offices and factories must have stay-at-work plans so that their employees do not have to go out for a week.

Nen also assured the residents to not worry about the food supply. "People do not have to stock up food and go to crowded places, placing themselves at risk," he said.

However, many people already flocked to supermarkets, markets and convenience stores on the same day to buy necessities. The number of customers at Big C Supermarket increased sharply as cashiers had to work at full capacity as people lined up. Some shelves at MM Mega Market were not refilled quickly enough.
