The central province of Quang Ngai has recorded 1,300 dengue fever cases so far this year, a three-fold increase from the same period last year.

Quang Ngai City has topped the province in the number of dengue fever patients.

Quang Ngai General Hospital’s Tropical Diseases Ward receives around 20 patients with infectious diseases daily, with the majority of them being dengue fever cases. Many of the patients suffer from thrombocytopenia and elevated liver enzymes.

Doctor Nguyen Thi Hang from Quang Ngai General Hospital said that the hospital has arranged more sickbeds. The hospital has also co-operated with patient families and voluntary blood donors to seek blood sources for patients in necessary cases.

The current weather with high humidity is among the reasons for the dengue fever spread in Quang Ngai, said provincial preventive medicine centre Doctor Le Van Trung.

The Quang Ngai Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has provided localities with chemicals to kill mosquitoes.

Many cities and provinces in Vietnam have experienced dengue fever outbreaks, including HCM City which has reported 16 deaths so far this year.
