A 47-year-old woman in the central province of Quang Nam has died of melioidosis, also known as Whitmore's Disease.
According to the Quang Nam Department of Health, the woman was sent to Tam Tri Quang Nam General Hospital on October 11 with high fever, breathing difficulties and tiredness.
The patient was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. She also had diabetes but had halted the treatment for one year. Her health quickly worsened, leading to acute respiratory failure and acute hyperglycemia.
Her blood and sputum samples were sent to the lab of Phan Chau Trinh University for testing.
She was then transferred to Danang Hospital for intensive treatment. But she died on the same day.
On October 14, the testing result from Phan Chu Trinh University indicated that she had been infected with Whitmore’s Disease.
Whitmore’s Disease is caused by Burkholderia Pseudomallei bacillus that can be found in soil, dirty water, or in rice fields and stagnant water. It can spread to humans and animals by direct contact with sources of contamination.
