Whirlwind tears roof off school in Dong Nai

Strong winds and heavy rain ripped the roof off a primary school in Dong Nai Province on May 4, damaging buildings but causing no injuries, authorities said.

The storm struck Binh An Commune at about 3 pm, tearing off the corrugated iron roof of the third floor of Binh An Primary School and sending debris into the schoolyard.

Local officials said no pupils or teachers were harmed, as the yard was empty when the roof was blown off.

The whirlwind also uprooted trees and damaged advertising boards and shop signs across the area.

Authorities deployed emergency forces, including police, military personnel and volunteers, to help clear debris and secure the site.

A day earlier, strong winds in Bu Dang Commune caused similar damage, tearing roofs from homes, flattening dozens of hectares of durian orchards and destroying more than 25 tonnes of fruit.

The Dong Nai Hydro-meteorological Centre said southern Vietnam has entered the rainy season, with frequent late afternoon and evening storms expected in the coming weeks.
