Heavy rain continues, raising flash flood risks in Lao Cai

Heavy rain is expected to persist in parts of Lao Cai Province, with authorities warning of flash floods and landslides in 19 communes as saturated soil increases the risk of dangerous conditions.

The Lao Cai Provincial Hydro-Meteorological Observatory said on the morning of November 3 that moderate to very heavy rain had affected several areas over the previous six hours, from 2 pm to 8 pm on November 2.

Rainfall reached 63.6mm at Ba Khe in Thuong Bang La, 90mm at Hung Khanh 1 and 71.8mm at Hong Ca in Hung Khanh.

Soil moisture models showed that some areas were nearing saturation, with moisture levels exceeding 80 per cent, while others had already reached saturation.

These conditions increase the risk of flash floods and landslides if rainfall continues.

Forecasters said further rain was expected in parts of the province over the next six hours, with rainfall generally ranging from 10mm to 20mm and exceeding 40mm in some locations.

Flash floods in small rivers and streams, landslides on steep hillsides and road embankments, and ground subsidence are possible in 19 communes.

Such hazards could threaten lives, damage residential infrastructure, disrupt production and cause traffic congestion, particularly in steep terrain, areas near streams and locations where the ground is already saturated.
