A young man in the central province of Quang Nam has just fled a human trafficking ring in Cambodia and safely returned home.
Quang Nam Police announced on August 7 that the 19-year-old man had just returned to his home in Duy Xuyen District after receiving instructions from local authorities.
According to a report from Quang Nam Police, the man's mother came to them on June 15, 2024, to report that his son had been cheated by a human trafficking ring and had been trafficked into Cambodia on June 10.
In Cambodia, men were forced to do different jobs and were sold to other employers. When he said he wanted to go home, the ring demanded that he pay VND70 million in ransom.
Quang Nam Police managed to contact the man and provided instructions to help him escape from the ring while waiting for the police to take action.
The man successfully fled on July 21 and returned home the same day.
He told the police that a woman from the ring had contacted him after seeing him looking for a job on some social websites. Using the Facebook account Bông Em, the woman promised him a good job with high pay in Cambodia and guided him to enter the country through the Moc Bai Border Gate in Tay Ninh Province.
Quang Nam Police said that the man was lucky to have successfully escaped from the ring.
"We've been informed of many similar cases in which young people were cheated by human trafficking rings and brought to Cambodia to work in casinos or some illegally operated organisations," the department said. "Many have yet to be able to escape. People are advised to be aware of these job offers and should seek support from local authorities as soon as possible if found cheated."
