Quang Nam households allowed to hire forestry land for ginseng plantation

Hundreds of households in the central province of Quang Nam have been permitted to hire forestry land for growing Ngoc Linh ginseng.

Hundreds of households in the central province of Quang Nam have been permitted to hire forestry land for growing Ngoc Linh ginseng.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the list consists of 453 households in Nam Tra My District which will lease a total 429 hectares for the work.

The move is aimed to contribute to the development and preservation of herbal trees in mountainous areas.

The department reported that the province is now home to more than 7,300 hectares of herbal trees, with the majority being grown in mountainous localities.

Earlier, seven organisations were licensed to rent 220 hectares of forestry land for planting herbs, including Ngoc Linh ginseng.

In 2015, the government approved a 15-year national project for Ngoc Linh ginseng that seeks to expand the farming area to 30,000 hectares in seven communes in Nam Tra My District, Quang Nam Province, at a cost of over VND9 trillion (USD38.9 million).

In June 2017 Ngoc Linh ginseng became a national product and since has been commonly referred to as Vietnamese ginseng.
