In order to prevent an outbreak in prisons, the Ministry of Public Security has asked all prisons and detention centres in Vietnam to tighten preventive measures.

Lieutenant-General Ho Thanh Dinh, Director of the Police Department of Management of Prison, Compulsory Re-education Center and Reformatory said due to the situation, and in order to ensure safety for the employees and the prisoners, they have directed prison managers to tighten control and suspend all visits.

Prison visits have already been limited in February. Inmates' family members must take all precautionary measures when they visit. The employees will temporarily not be able to take leaves of absence and all meetings are cancelled.

"All employees are requested to take precautionary measures and the prisons are disinfected frequently and equipped with hand wash," Dinh said.

Colonel Nguyen Huu Am from Hoang Tien Prison said no members of the public had come in and out of the prison recently. They have bought 15 thermometers, six sprayers, handwash, Chloramine B and face masks. They disinfect the prison twice a week and regularly clean the cells and visiting areas on a daily basis.

They also follow the updates of the outbreak and inform employees and inmates about the situation. Since spring is the prime time for diseases, preventative work is among their top priorities.

"The health of the prisoners is good. They know they have to protect themselves," Am said.
