President Sang meets Philippine Lower House Speaker

President Truong Tan Sang received Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Philippines Faliciana Belmonte during which he said the signing of the Vietnam-Philippines joint statement on a strategic partnership opened a new era in bilateral ties.

On November 17, President Truong Tan Sang received Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Philippines Faliciana Belmonte during which he said the signing of the Vietnam-Philippines joint statement on a strategic partnership following talks with the Philippines President opened a new era in bilateral ties.
The statement also created new momentum for consolidating trust and contributing to peace, prosperity, and stability in the region.

Vietnam encouraged and supported both countries’ businesses to increase investment cooperation in food processing, services, industrial production, and fashion, Sang told the host.

As the two countries will celebrate the 40 th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year, he suggested strengthening the exchange of delegations and high-level meetings while holding cultural and people-to-people exchanges to deepen mutual understanding between the two peoples.

Highlighting national defence-security ties as a significant and strategic pillar in bilateral relationship, Sang Vietnamese leader said he welcomes Philippine Defence Minister’s visit to Vietnam in 2016 and the Philippine Government’s settlement of illegal fishing in a friendly and humanitarian spirit.

On the recent complicated developments in the East Sea, including the massive-scale land reclamation that has changed the status quo, escalated disputes and tension, and threatened peace and stability in the region, the President pressed for information sharing and coordinated the respective country’s stance on the issue.

The Philippines Lower House Speaker said that his country was impressed with Vietnam’s achievements in foreign investment attraction and would learn from Vietnam’s experience to fine-tun its policies.

He added that their similarities and geographical proximity will make it easier for Vietnam and the Philippines to step up all around cooperation.

Meeting President of the Philippines-Vietnam Friendship Association Eddie Harde the same day, President Truong Tan Sang hailed the birth of the association in 2014 as a progress of friendship and solidarity between the two peoples since the establishment of their diplomatic ties 40 years ago.

Two-way trade last year reached nearly US$3 billion  with the Philippines ranking 31 st out of 101 countries and territories investing in Vietnam, he said.

Harde told the Vietnamese State leader that the association is embarking on people-to-people diplomacy projects and expressed his wish that cross-cultural exchanges will pave the way for stronger multifaceted cooperation in the near future.
