The workshop themed “Vietnam National Partnership against transnational crime through regional law enforcement” was official kicked off December 13 in Hanoi.

Jointly hosted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Vietnamese agencies, the workshop offered a forum for partners to talk about the regulatory mechanism of the Border Liaison Offices (BLOs), draft the action plan for the PATROL project in the period of 2010-2011, as well as decide prioritized joint activities between Vietnam and the UNODC.

In addition, the workshop is expected to mark a new step in drug prevention by suggesting specific solutions which would supplement and perfect the operation of the BLOs in the coming time.

Colonel Nguyen Trung Kien, Chief of the Secretariat of the Standing Office for Drugs Control (SODC) under the Ministry of Public Security highlighted that the workshop represents the solid determination and strong commitment from the Vietnamese Government to cement and deepen ties with the UNODC and regional countries for the sake of peace, stability, prosperity and a drug-fee ASEAN.

The event also offers a good chance for Vietnamese officials to review the country’s fulfillment of commitments with the BLOs and share information and experience with regional partners, Mr. Kien added.

Addressing the workshop, Ms. Zhuldyz Akisheva, UNODC Country Manager for Vietnam hoped that delegates would share experience of not only drug prevention but also illegal migration, human trafficking and other transnational crimes.
