Northern Vietnam forecast to experience sharp cold spell

A strong cold spell is likely to sweep across northern Vietnam on December 13-14, sending temperatures in some high mountainous areas below 5 degrees Celsius.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from the night of December 12 to December 13, an intense northeast monsoon and upper-level wind convergence will bring widespread moderate to heavy rain to the north, with thunderstorms, whirlwinds, hail and strong gusts.

From December 13 to 14, northern localities will see a sharp cold wave, with mountainous areas dropping below 10 degrees Celsius and high mountains under 5 degrees Celsius; lowland temperatures may fall below 13 degrees Celsius. Conditions will ease from December 15 but remain cold.

The forecasting centre said that on December 10, Thua Thien-Hue, Danang and eastern areas from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa saw moderate to heavy rain. Between 7 am and 7 pm, rainfall exceeded 100 mm in several places, including 194 mm at Song Hinh in Dak Lak and 138 mm at Khanh Hiep in Khanh Hoa.

More rain is expected on the night of December 10 and on December 11 across Hue and the south-central coast, with 15-30 mm and isolated falls above 60 mm.

The Central Highlands and the southeast may receive 10-30 mm, with localised totals above 50 mm. Thunderstorms could bring whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong gusts, and heavy rain may trigger flash floods, landslides and flooding in low-lying areas.
