The people who left HCM City and rode motorbikes for over 1,000km to Nghe An's Ben Thuy Ward were moved by the support they received at home. At the checkpoints, they were given drinks, food, and even cash.

Nguyen Duy Cuong, party secretary of Ben Thuy Ward, is the first one to donate cash at the checkpoint. Then a resident, Ngan Vu, donated VND30m (USD1,300) to help the returnees. Since then, many other local people have also donated cash at the checkpoints. 47-year-old Dinh Thu Hien said her family had donated VND100m. Each returnee was given VND500,000 (USD22).

"A friend living in Australia sent VND100m to help. Many people in HCM City and Australia sent me over VND400m. My friends encouraged me to continue the work and will send more support if necessary," she said.
