Up to 6,901 houses have been built and presented to the poor in border areas and on islands over the past three years, according to a conference in Hanoi on July 19 to review the ‘Houses for the Poor along the Border and on Islands’ movement.

The movement was launched in October 2008 by the Border Guard High Command, the Vietnamese Fatherland Front and the People’s Army Newspaper.

During the three-year movement, around VND 235.75 billion (USD11.6 million) was donated by over 2,700 organisations and individuals.

In addition to the houses, public facilities, such as schools and health clinics, were also built to help improve the lives of residents in border areas and on islands.
