A nearly-completed bridge suddenly collapsed in the southern province of Ca Mau.

According to reports from local authorities, the incident occurred on Tuesday at a bridge project spanning the Cai Doi Vam River in Phu Tan District.
"A pier of the bridge suddenly subsided by four metres and collapsed, causing two spans to fall into the river," the report said. "Fortunately there were no boats travelling underneath at the time."

The bridge project, which spans 280 metres and has an investment of VND54 billion (USD2.4 million), was invested by Ca Mau Provincial Transport Management Board and carried out by the TPM Corporation. The project was almost completed and workers were about to install the railing.

Ca Mau authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse while local people have been warned not to travel near the site.
