HCM City People’s Committee has sent a document to the Ministry of Transport on its proposal to ensure traffic safety for Tan Son Nhat Airport, particularly during holiday periods.

According to the committee, all roads to the airport face serious traffic congestion. The situation worsens during the run-up to holidays, particularly the Lunar New Year. As a measure to deal with the problem the committee has asked the Ministry of Transport to instruct Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam to raise the number of flights which depart at between 10 pm and 5 am. Meanwhile, fewer flights would be scheduled 6 am to 10 pm.

The committee also recommended allowing bus drivers to park near terminals to be more convenient for passengers. The airport management board is also required to arrange a separate lane for buses.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport authorities recently advised passengers to arrive at the airport three hours before flight departure in the run-up to the Tet period to avoid traffic jams and delays at check-in. They also suggested limiting the number of people coming to the airport to pick up or see off passengers.

However, deputy transport minister Le Dinh Tho said asking passengers to arrive three hours at the airport early was evidence of weak management skills.
