Ministry warns of scam Australia labour export programmes

The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs have warned about scams targeting people who want to work in Australia.

The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs have warned about scams targeting people who want to work in Australia.

The ministry has asked localities to investigate and deal with scams that target workers who want to join the Agriculture Visa programme in Australia.

"Although the programme has not yet been implemented by the two countries, some agencies have started offering high-cost applications," the ministry said, adding that localities should closely monitor and prevent any organisations from taking advantage of the programme to cheat people.

"After completing discussions about the programme, we’ll co-operate with the Australian Embassy to issue detailed information about the programme," the ministry said.

Minister of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung and Australian Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Marise Payne in March signed the first memorandum of understanding (MoU) under the Australian Agriculture Visa Programme.

Under the MoU, Australia planned to receive about 1,000 Vietnamese workers per year with an average wage of VND 52.8-66 million (AUD 3,200 AUD-4,000) per month.

In September last year, the Australian Government launched the Agriculture Visa programme to address workforce shortages in the agriculture sector.

Vietnam has been selected as one of four priority countries to join the programme besides Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Minister Dao Ngoc Dung underlined that the MoU was an important milestone in bilateral ties.

Vietnam hopes to send 90,000 people abroad this year, focusing on markets with high and stable incomes, according to the ministry.

Just 45,000 Vietnamese workers were sent abroad in 2021, including more than 15,000 female workers as many countries issued regulations to restrict entry for foreign citizens due to Covid-19. This figure was half of the year’s plan.
